AfAS-2025 Information
Welcome to the African Astronomical Society (AfAS) Conference and General Assembly 2025! Taking place from 23 to 28 March 2025 at the University of South Africa (UNISA), this dynamic event will be held in a hybrid format, with both in-person and virtual attendees. Hosted by UNISA, the AfAS-2025 conference is set to bring together a vibrant mix of professionals, researchers, students, and education and outreach officers from across the African continent and the global astronomical community. Here, astronomers, government representatives, policymakers, and international partners from Africa and other parts of the world will converge to share ideas and collaborate.
This year, we celebrate Africa’s growing contributions to the field, with a programme that covers astronomy’s latest scientific advancements, impactful outreach initiatives, and innovative education activities. Key discussions will highlight the legacy of the International Astronomical Union General Assembly in Cape Town (IAU-GA2024), updates on flagship projects, and strategies for the continued development of astronomy infrastructure on the continent. Additionally, sessions will focus on leveraging astronomy for development, fostering youth interest in science, and strengthening our collaborative networks within Africa and worldwide.
The conference is organised through the AfAS committees and in partnership with partner projects, including the African Planetarium Association (APA), African Science Stars Publication (ASSAP), the African-European Radio Astronomy Platform (AERAP), and support from the Office of Astronomy for Development (IAU-OAD).
As this is the year of the General Assembly, a new AfAS Executive Committee will be elected, and the assembly will also provide a platform for the outgoing Executive Committee to engage directly with the community, reflecting on our achievements. The General Assembly will host key discussions, including updates on our Constitution from the dedicated Task Team and future strategies to enhance member engagement and value. We will also explore new membership benefits and the Society’s sustainability.
Get ready for a conference filled with insightful talks, collaborative workshops, and vibrant discussions that promise to ignite inspiration and strengthen connections across the astronomy community. The conference is free to attend, and we’re excited to welcome you to this landmark event celebrating African Astronomy!
